Pastor's Reflection - 2/21/19

This morning I happened to look across the street and noticed hundreds of Canadian geese just hanging out together on Solly's field. They all looked very content and happy. With absolutely no warning, no fanfare, and for no particular reason (at least none that I was aware of), one of them decided to fly off. Instantaneously, and without a second's hesitation, every single bird in the entire flock followed him or her up, up and away. Not one bird hesitated and not one bird stayed behind.

There was something fascinating about watching this scene unfold on my way to the office this morning. It made me think about the fact that there are so few things in life where everyone works together as a unified team. It's rare for people to all be on the same page at the same time. More commonly, we are creatures who value the idea that we are individuals - all of us on different paths - and we like it that way.

But what a beautiful thing it is on those occasions when we all come together for a common purpose! It happens each Sunday morning when our church family gathers to give God the glory as one body. It happens during missional events such as RISE Sunday, the Chicken Barbeque, and the Living Nativity when we work together as a family in Christ. It happens during Vacation Bible School week, when many adults and many youth give of their time and energy to share the good news of the Gospel with our own children and children from the surrounding community.

Leading our individual lives and walking our separate paths is not a bad thing, it's a good thing - most of the time. But there are times when, just like those geese in the field, we are meant to fly together as one Body in Christ.
